What is a Period Pain ?

Period pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, refers to the discomfort or cramping that occurs in the lower abdomen or pelvic region just before or during menstruation. It is a common condition affecting many women during their menstrual cycle. The pain is caused by the uterus contracting to shed its lining, which can lead to muscle cramps and inflammation.

There are two types of period pain: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs in women without any underlying health conditions, while secondary dysmenorrhea is associated with conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include dull aches, sharp pains, nausea, and back pain.

While period pain is a natural part of menstruation, it can be managed with pain relief medications, heating pads, exercise, and dietary changes. Severe or persistent pain should be discussed with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.
