What causes period pain?

Period pain, also known as menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea, is primarily caused by uterine contractions. During your menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus (endometrium) thickens in preparation for a possible pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, the endometrium sheds, leading to bleeding. The contractions of the uterus help to expel the shed lining, which can cause pain.
